Safe Handling of Found Syringes

Chief Paul F. Tucker

Business 978-744-0171   Non-Emergency Request for Police 978-744-1212

Because of recent changes in the law, there is an increase in the number of improperly discarded hypodermic needles and syringes. Needle-stick injuries can cause considerable anxiety because of the fear of contracting blood-borne diseases such as HIV, hepatitis B and hepatitis C as well as other diseases such as tetanus. The risk of acquiring a disease from a needle-stick injury in a community setting is very low, however where needles/syringes are found after being carelessly discarded, it is important that they are disposed of promptly and safely to ensure the public, especially our children, are not harmed.

The preferred method of disposing syringes and other 'sharps' you might find is to call the Salem Police at 978-744-1212 and an officer will be dispatched to secure and dispose of the syringe.

We ask that you stay where the syringe is

to better direct the responding officer.
