Salem, Massachusetts is situated 16 miles north of Boston and borders the Eastern seaboard.  The Salem Police Headquarters is centrally located within the city and adjacent to downtown Historic Salem. The City of Salem hosts a diverse community with over 41,000 citizens and is primarily a residential area with some commercial districts.  Salem is home to the North Shore Medical Center, Salem State College, Dominion – Salem Harbor Power Station and schools of all grades.

The Salem Police Department is responsible for patrolling approximately 8 square miles.  In 2008 the Salem Police Department responded to over 30,000 calls for service.

The full complement for the Salem Police Department is 97.  Currently, the Salem Police Department has 81 full-time sworn officers.  The department is comprised of the Patrol Division, Criminal Investigation Division, and the Special Operations Division.
